Detailed programme of events of the VII “Music on the Heights” International Festival of Chamber Music, 12-19 September, 2015
12.09.2015
The opening concert of the week-long “Music on the Heights” festival features works by composers who need little introduction: Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart and Gioacchino Rossini, as well as the lesser known Italian composer Saverio Mercadante. They will be performed by some of the most prominent virtuosos of their instruments: the Israeli clarinetist Shirley Brill and the Polish flutist Łukasz Długosz, who will be accompanied by the extremely popular and highly respected Sinfonietta Cracovia orchestra under the direction of one of Poland’s most talented conductors, Michał Dworzyński.
13.09.2015
This concert was created out of regret that many valuable musical events which take place in various places in Poland are just one-off and therefore can only be appreciated by a small audience. To save at least some of these events from being forgotten, the festival’s organisers are “borrowing” from the program of the “Instalakcje” Music Festival held at Warsaw’s Nowy Teatr. Here, unconventional genres are presented, often on the borderline between music and theatre, which do not have an established position in the traditional festivals of contemporary music in Poland. The following quote is part of a description of the project from 2014, taken from the Nowy Teatr website: “A recurring theme in discussions between musicians, composers and the director of the program was the issue of whether ‘songs’, so often considered an ‘outmoded’ musical form, are able to adequately express something contemporary and universal?”
The singer Barbara Kinga Majewska will perform on stage with the Kwadrofonik ensemble, who have performed before at our festival.
14.09.2015
This concert of songs by Richard Strauss and Mieczysław Karłowicz arranged by Douglas Brown for voice and piano sextet is a continuation of reflections on the theme of different interpretations of songs, giving this musical genre a new character. The repertoire is the result of joint work between Polish and German musicians. The performers are: Jadwiga Rappé (alto), Mariusz Rutkowski (piano), Leszek Sokołowski (double bass), and the POLISH QUARTET OF THE DEUTSCHE OPER BERLIN.
15.09.2015
The festival will also be continuing its tradition of screening films about music. This year we will be showing Mahler, a biographical film from 1974 of the Late-Romantic Austrian composer, one of the most highly regarded films by the controversial British film director Ken Russell. It is thematically linked with the festival’s final concert on September the 19th which features work by Mahler.
16.09.2015
The concert will present a selection of compositions of what is considered contemporary music, although some of the pieces date back as far as the early twentieth century. During this evening, in addition to the works of Arnold Schoenberg, Anton Webern, Paweł Szymański (who will be present as an honorary guest of this year’s festival) and Steve Reich, there will also be some music by Paweł Mykietyn, the artistic director of the “Music on the Heights” festival. The concert will be performed by the DAFO Quartet from Krakow.
17.09.2015
Thursday’s concert is a reunion with Paweł Szymański and his music. It will be an important event as it will feature the second public performance of a piece composed for viola and piano. It will also be an opportunity to hear works of the underappreciated Polish artist – Andrzej Czajkowski. Among the performers will be a great advocate of this composer – the pianist Maciej Grzybowski, and the masterly violist Krzysztof Chorzelski, a member of the famous Belcea Quartet. This part of the concert will be complemented by Pentasonata by Andrzej Panufnik. However, this concert will not be exclusively contemporary. It also features a sonata for piano and clarinet (adapted for piano and viola) by Johannes Brahms.
18/09/2015
Two events will be held on this day. The first one will be a concert honouring the participants of the International Masterclass Series, during which the premiere of a piece for string quartet by Maciej Negrey will be performed. In addition to string ensembles working under the direction of Krzysztof Chorzelski (Belcea Quartet), participants will be able to attend classes led by the flutist Łukasz Długosz, clarinetist Shirley Brill and piano chamber musician Jonathan Aner.
In the evening (20:00 at the Church of the Holy Cross) a musical misterium will be held. The late French composer Gérard Grisey is considered the father of spectral music. His last piece Quatre chants pour le franchir le seuil [Four Songs for Stepping over the Threshold]) imaginatively explores the existential sphere between life and death.
This will probably be one of the most powerful experiences of the festival.
19.09. 2015
Gustav Mahler’s work, which will be performed at this year’s festival’s final concert, is well-known. The festival has featured his works in previous years, such as the chamber version of Symphony No. 4. This time we will present Arnold Schoenberg and Reiner Riehn’s arrangement of Mahler’s song Das Lied von der Erde [The Song of the Earth].Some of the best Polish (and not only) musicians will be selected by the festival’s organisers, and led by the popular maestro, the Georgian conductor George Tchitchinadze.
